Catalog Description: Introduction to storyboarding and the planning processes of visual storytelling. Exploration of cinematic vocabulary and storyboard technique in the creation of both personal and professional expression.

Purpose: An introduction to the principles and practices of storyboarding for animation

Method of Instruction: Each student will learn the course content through lecture, multimedia demonstrations and student interactive projects. This is a production class and each student is expected to create a timed storyboard animatic by the end of the course as their final project.

Course Objectives:

1. Demonstrate the ability to represent visually different shot types, angles, cuts,

transitions, posing, staging and camera moves on standard storyboard templates.

2. Develop different formats of storyboards that will best serve the intended media.

3. Analyze and deconstruct existing storyboard samples

4. Plan and develop a rough thumbnail storyboard in several different versions that will

serve as a base to create a finalized project.

5. Create a final storyboard and animatic with all the necessary labeling and sequencing

information that will make a logical visual representation of the project

6. Create sketching and shading techniques to represent mood and tone in each scene.

7. Critically evaluate peer work and provide effective and positive feedback.

Late Policy/Make-up: No late work will be accepted after 11:00pm on the night that it is due. Missing this deadline will result in an F for that assignment. If a quiz is missed the student will not be allowed to re-take it and this will result in an F as well. However, if you will be missing a class for a valid reason (ie: emergency, death in family, broken arm, etc.) where an assignment is due or a quiz will be given, you must contact me PRIOR to class to arrange a make-up time to satisfy the assignment (No extra credit will be given in this class).
