SKY TRAIN: Tibetan Women on the Edge of History
February 1 ~ March 11, 2010
Opening Reception
Wednesday, February 3
1-3pm
Gallery Open Monday through Fridays 11-3pm
Chinese American Canyon Sam uncovers the untold history of Tibet from the perspective of its women in a lyrical memoir spanning more than twenty years. Traveling on China’s ‘Sky Train’ to Lhasa in 2007 she stays with the Tibetan family with whom she lived two decades before and revisits women from her earlier oral history project. As she reveals the unexplored stories of women’s resistance, courage and spiritual resilience in fifty years of Chinese occupation, and gives a firsthand account of the changes brought by the controversial new train line, she comes to embrace her own capacity for faith and acceptance.
Exhibit includes the video of “The Dissident, ” Sam’s nationally-acclaimed one-woman performance inspired by her meeting with a young Tibetan nun freedom fighter, photos by the author, and archival photos from the collection of Jigme and Rinchen Dolma Taring (author of Daughter of Tibet).
